Come and join us at The Seaside Museum for the documentary screening of "The Canterbury & Whitstable Railway - The First Railway Romance". Released in 2009, the first film in the series takes a look history and preservation and the Canterbury & Whitstable Railway route, with archive film footage. Original archive footage and photographs tell the story of the Canterbury & Whitstable Railway from its inception in 1825 through to its closure in 1952 and beyond.
The Canterbury & Whitstable Railway, affectionately referred to as the Crab & Winkle, was the first railway in the world to haul passenger trains by steam as part of a regular service. Tyler Hill tunnel on the line, was constructed by Herne Bay contractor George Burge, and was the first passenger railway tunnel in the world.
There will be a brief introduction to the film by local railway historian and Southeastern Railway employee Mark Jones.
The evening will start at 7pm and is expected to last approximately one and half hours.
