Herne Bay & Whitstable Railway 200 events

I'm delighted to be working with  Southeastern Railway , The Seaside Museum , Herne Bay, and  Whitstable Museum , to bring you two exhibitions celebrating 200 years of railway history and development, from The Canterbury & Whitstable Railway being given Royal Assent, and the first passenger train on the Stockton & Darlington Railway, to the modern day. There will be a host of associated events including history walks, guided tours, documentary screenings, heritage walks, and cycle rides incorporating  Crab & Winkle Line Trust ,  Spokes East Kent Cycle Group , and  East Kent Model Railway Society . Our events will start with the opening of our three month Herne Bay and Kent Coast Railway 200 exhibition, at the Seaside Museum from 12th April.

Celebrating 200 years of rail travel.   Join the Crab & Winkle Line Trust for a group walk along the route of the historic Canterbury & Whitstable Railway in celebration of the 195th anniversary of the opening of the first railway to haul passenger trains by steam as part of a regular service. Herne Bay & Kent Coast Railway 200 exhibition curator Mark Jones will  be joining the East Kent Model Railway Society in Birchington to promote Railway 200 events at Herne Bay and Whitstable. Birchington Model Railway Exhibition   The Centre, Alpha Road, Birchington, CT7 9EG. Adults £5, Children under 16 accompanied by a paying adult are free. Don't forget, East Kent Model Railway Society will be holding a pop-up exhibition at the Seaside Museum, Herne Bay, on Saturday 28th June.

  Whitstable Railway 200 History Talk by Southeastern Railway employee and local railway historian, Mark Jones. A fascinating looking at the history and development of our railways, from the Canterbury & Whitstable, to the construction the current Whitstable station and the Kent coast.  Supported by his employer Southeastern, Mark has has served the local community 40 years, and studied local railway for ten. Come and join us at The Seaside Museum for the documentary screening of "The Canterbury & Whitstable Railway - The First Railway Romance".   Released in 2009, the first film in the series takes a look history and preservation and the Canterbury & Whitstable Railway route, with archive film footage.  Original archive footage and photographs tell the story of the Canterbury & Whitstable Railway from its inception in 1825 through to its closure in 1952 and beyond. The Canterbury & Whitstable Railway, affectionately referred to as the Crab & Winkle, was the first railway in the world to haul passenger trains by steam as part of a regular service.  Tyler Hill tunnel on the line, was constructed by Herne Bay contractor George Burge, and was the first passenger railway tunnel in the world.
